SERAP Vows To Drag Osun Governor, Adeleke To Court Over ‘Authoritarian’ Removal Of Chief Judge
Civic organisation, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has called on Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State to reverse immediately the unlawful removal of Adepele Ojo as the Chief Judge of the state.
BEYOND AFRICA reported earlier that the Osun State House of Assembly had on Thursday, during plenary ordered that Justice Ojo should step aside pending the outcome of an investigation against her.
Approving the resolution of the assembly, Governor Adeleke, on Friday appointed Justice Olayinka Afolabi as the acting Chief Judge.
BEYOND AFRICA on Saturday learnt that the Nigerian Bar Association has berated Governor Adeleke for the suspension of the Chief Judge of the State.
The body of lawyers, however, declared that it would not recognise Afolabi as the CJ of Osun State, while vowing that it would ensure that the decision of the state government does not stand.
In its reaction, SERAP demanded that the vicious cycle of authoritarian attacks on the rule of law must stop in Nigeria, while threatening that if the removal of Ojo was not reversed, it would sue the government.
SERAP wrote in statement shared on its X account: "Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke must immediately reverse his apparently unlawful removal of Adepele Ojo as the Chief Judge of Osun state.
"This vicious cycle of authoritarian attacks on the rule of law must stop. We'll see in court if this illegality is not reversed."
